John Edward
Redmond, Jr.
February 7, 1945 — October 8, 2026
John Edward Redmond Jr., 81, of Kansas City, Missouri, died peacefully at home on Thursday, October 8, 2026, surrounded by his family.
Born in Kansas City to the late John Edward Redmond Sr. and Lola (Reynolds) Redmond, John grew up in Brookside’s St. Peter's Parish. He graduated from Rockhurst High School in 1963, where he lettered in debate, and later earned his degree from the University of Missouri–Kansas City in 1967. Immersed in the counterculture and anti-war politics of the 1960s and '70s, John became a respected voice in local activist circles. He dedicated his professional life to public service, spending many years with the City of Kansas City, Missouri, and later working as a juvenile counselor. In August 1979, he married Susan Ramirez, sharing 47 years of marriage and building a beautiful family. He will be remembered for his love of the blues, his soft spot for animals, and his enduring devotion to his city and community.
We raise a glass to a good man and wish him peace.
John is survived by his wife, Susan Ramirez; his children Rae Marquart (Jason), Vincent Redmond (Nichole Thompson), Rose Redmond, and David Redmond (Pamela); his grandchildren Olivia, August, Eli, Ava, Ophelia, and Phenie Jo; his step-grandchildren Brandon and Corey; brothers-in-law David Ramirez, Alfred Ramirez (Kristi), Michael Ramirez (Laurie); sisters-in-law Zita Reider (John), Janet Baggett, Vickie Baggett (George), Gloria Smith (Kevin), Sara Sanchis, and Stephanie Lindsey (William); and his many nieces and nephews.
The family extends their deep gratitude to the staff of Monarch Hospice for their compassionate care.
A private memorial service will be held by the family.
In honor of John’s passions, the family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the KC Pet Project or the Kansas City Blues Society (Michael Shannon Musicians Fund).
